Joseph D. Eppihimer (Poppy) 84, of Reading passed away peacefully June 4, 2022, at Promedica of Sinking Spring.

Joe was born on May 17, 1938, in Reading PA, he was the son of the late Joseph F. And Stella (Bucks) Eppihimer. Joe married Judith Marie (Ertel) on February 19, 1966.  They were married for 56 years.  

Joe was a master plumber and a retired member of UA Plumbers Local 690. Joe also retired from the Reading School District as a plumber in 1999.  Joe was a member of the Reading City Council from 1996-1999 and was elected Mayor of Reading in 2000.  After his 4 years as Mayor, Joe then retired from working in 2004.  

Joe was a generous and giving man.  He enjoyed helping people. Joe was especially proud of the scholarship program he and Judy created for the high schools in Reading. 
Joe loved the city of Reading and loved to tell stories about growing up in Reading and the changes that the city has seen.

As a kid Joe enjoyed baseball and softball. He had fond memories of playing baseball at Hillside Playground and softball on the Merchant League. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family. He and Judy made many trips to Massachusetts and Wisconsin to visit his family. He enjoyed the Reading Phillies baseball games, watching Phillies games on TV and sitting on the front porch feeding the squirrels and birds and watching the deer. 

In addition to Judy, Joe is survived by two sons. David and his wife Diane, grandson Drew, step granddaughter Dana of Janesville, WI. And step grandson Dan Wiese of Pasadena, CA. Michael and his wife Lois and granddaughters Anna and Natalie of Franklin, MA. Brother Tom and his wife Debbie and nephews Ryan and Kyle, of Temple, PA. Joe was preceded in death by his sister Jean Adam.

Joe will be remembered as a kind man with a big heart who loved his family.

Private services will be held at a later date.
